Caring Hearts

ProyectosProject Taray

tarayThis is our first project and is named after the place where the children that we work with live. Taray was one of the areas most affected by the flooding rains which occurred in early 2010. Half the houses in the village were literally washed away and many families were left homeless and without means to support themselves. Parents inevitably had to work more hours and often in neighbouring villages, reducing the individual care and attention available to the children. It was then that we decided to start Sonco Wasi’s two programs here: the Basic Health program and the Alternative Education program.
Alternative Education

OUR WORKSHOP ARE:

Music

We teach children songs and how to play the Peruvian cajon and percussion instruments made from recycled materials.
Music has the gift of bringing people together and the children can experience the concept of teamwork and create something special that makes them feel proud.
This workshop has many other benefits. Learning music is a fun way to improve auditory development, speech, sensory and motor skills. It also increases memory and enhances corporal expression.
In additional, the children will build on their capacity to gain confidence, better concentration, intellectual development, mutual respect and love for themselves. All this in a fun and exciting atmosphere where children begin to express themselves in a different way and are capable of integrating actively in society.

Drawing and Paiting

We teach children to work with different materials such as watercolours, crayons and coloured pencils. We discuss and feel the different textures and learn to absorb and appreciate our environment by creating art inside and outside of the classroom.
Through art the children discover a world of shapes, lines and imagination. This workshop encourages communication, creativity, sensitivity and increases the concentration and expression, and promotes in them a sense of pride and happiness.

Ecology and Environment

This is a concept which is fully incorporated into the thinking that we have at Sonco Wasi. In this particular workshop we talk about respecting the planet and the environment. We work with the children on recycling activities, creating a garden and the maintenance of green areas. Also, in this workshop we will obtain material to use in other workshops such as crafts and music. Caring for our earth and understanding sustainability helps the children develop a new world view that will be useful for them in any aspect of their future lives.

Crafts

We create crafts with the children that are fun, practical and useful. In most cases we use recycled material. Aside from creative development and teamwork, this workshop is useful for the children to discover their dexterity and differentiate between the activities in which they tend to have more ability.

Basic English

Studying English is achieved through play, songs and rhymes and activities appropriate for the ages of the children. Divided into 2 or 3 groups relevant to their age and ability, they learn in a way that incorporates our different learning styles; auditory, tactile and visual. Using plenty of enthusiasm, visual props, music and songs helps the children remember the new language and creates an atmosphere of fun. Less like a traditional classroom with grammar and exams and more like a workshop, where the children are introduced to English in a natural and gentle way, similar to the way a child learns its mother tongue, through repetition and exposure to real life contexts and objects. We have the resources, the teacher provides the energy, and the class space lights up with eager children learning while playing.

Culture an Customs

This workshop involves the children learning that the world is extensive and that there are many people and customs that they have to respect without forgetting the importance of learning about their own language and culture. In this workshop children develop different activities such as reading, writing and basic classes, combining the Spanish language with our native Quechuan language reinforcing in them the value of this language and the importance of keeping it present and alive.

Also, through audio visuals we teach children the importance and the meaning of the festivals and traditional dances and the rich culture of our country in a very practical, fun and easy way

Reading

This workshop looks at developing reading as a routine, working to develop the children’s imagination and their level of comprehension. Through stories, and easy reading fun books, we help to enrich their vocabulary improving their pronunciation and promoting interaction with the text being read, always helped and guided by our volunteers.

Free Workshops

This workshop takes place on Saturdays, we call it ‘extension day’. These workshops are shaped through ideas from the volunteers according to individual’s talents. These will be useful and fun workshops more geared towards the socialising of the Sonco Wasi team and the opportunity to make new friends.
One possible workshop is geography. Our volunteers from different countries could share their knowledge of their country’s language, traditions, dances, costumes, customs and heritage, and typical foods. It could be amusing to learn together about each other, celebrating our diversity and similarities.
Another option is gastronomy. Cooking together to create various foreign and Peruvian dishes that are simple to make but delicious to taste, we can also prepare delectable desserts for our sweet tooth!
Finally, the dance and sports workshop to exercise a little, developing our dance abilities, those of the children and all the Sonco Wasi group having fun and enjoying a team afternoon.
Essentially, ‘extension days’ provide us with the chance to share some relaxed ‘down time’ with the children, our friends and the Sonco Wasi team, get involved with enjoyable activities outside of the week day workshops and get to know each other better.
